The Day Jesus Didn't Hurry
The Day Jesus Didn't Hurry
The only one who could help Jairus - was Jesus.
"Hurry, hurry, hurry," thought Jairus, as he left his house. "Hurry, hurry, hurry," he thought as he went through the streets to the lakeside. He HAD to find Jesus. And for a very important reason. His daughter was very, very sick - and if he didn't hurry, she would die.
When Jairus got to the lakeside, the crowd was so great, his heart nearly stopped beating. Would he be on time? Would Jesus come? "Hurry, hurry, hurry," he thought, as he squeezed his way through the crowd.
Then - at last - there was Jesus!
Jairus ran up to him and fell down at his feet and said, "Oh Jesus - my little girl is so sick she is going to die. Please come and make her well!"
And Jesus said, "Yes, I will go with you."
Oh, joy!
Jairus scrambled to his feet and began to lead the way. "Oh hurry, hurry, hurry," sang in his mind. But the crowds were so great, they COULDN'T hurry. People pressed in on Jesus from every side. Sick people - curious people - nice people - noisy people. They pressed him back and slowed him down. They kept stopping him along the way, some to talk to him-some to just touch his robes. And Jairus thought of his daughter at home, and his mind shouted - "Hurry - HURRY!"
And then -
The worst possible thing happened.
Somebody from Jairus' house broke through the crowd and said, "It's too late! Your daughter is dead. There is no need for Jesus to come." There was no longer any need to hurry.
Jairus looked sadly at Jesus. And Jesus said softly, "Don't be afraid. Just trust me - and I'll help you." And they went on toward Jairus' house.
Jairus didn't hurry now. There was no need to hurry. But he couldn't help wondering. What was Jesus going to DO?
When they got to Jairus' house Jairus knew the news was true, all right. The house was filled with people - crying. His daughter was dead.
Jesus looked at the people. He looked at poor Jairus. And then he took command. He took the girl's mother and Jairus. He took three of his disciples. And they all went into the girl's room. Nobody else could go in.
There was the girl lying on the bed - and she looked just as if she were sleeping. Jesus went up to her and took her hand - and said - "Little girl, arise."
Jairus held his breath. Nobody in the room made a sound. And then - and then - The girl's eyelashes fluttered.
She began to breathe.
She sat up and looked around.
Then she STOOD UP!
There she was, standing before them - alive, and completely well again!
The only one who could have helped her - was Jesus. And it didn't matter whether he hurried or not. Jesus could do anything. He is the Son of God.

THINK!
Why do you suppose Jesus made Jairus wait? What do you think that taught Jairus? Can you think of times when your mother and dad have told you that you would have to wait for something you wanted very badly? What were the reasons you had to wait? Can you think of times when God has answered your prayers by saying, "Wait. I will give you this at a better time?" Aren't you glad God always answers your prayers in the way he knows is best?
